Chinese Language Fellowship Program (2025-2026 Program)
- Location: Seattle, WA, USA
- Stipend: Up to $50,000 to cover tuition, registration/visa
fees, living and travel costs.Application GuidelinesThe NBR Chinese
Language Fellowship Program (CLFP), funded by the Carnegie
Corporation of New York, awards fellowships to American graduate
students for one academic year of full-time intensive Chinese
language training, generally in Taiwan or China.PhD Track (up to
$50,000)This track allows currently enrolled PhD students to
participate in a language program of their choice in Taiwan or
China for ten months, followed by a summer language program with
one-on-one classes, focusing on primary sources related to their
dissertation research.Prospective PhD Track (up to $40,000)This
track allows current or recent master's degree students planning to
pursue a PhD to participate in a language program of their choice
in Taiwan or China for ten months. Applicants must be currently
enrolled in or recently graduated from a master's
program.Eligibility RequirementsTo be eligible for a fellowship,
applicants must:
- Demonstrate intermediate Chinese language ability through
transcripts or language assessment tests. The fellowship is NOT for
beginner students.
- Devote themselves to full-time intensive Chinese-language study
for one academic year. The fellowship does NOT support substantive
doctoral research.
- Desire to advance U.S. public policy toward China or contribute
to scholarly research and teaching on China.
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.Application
RequirementsTo be considered, applicants must submit:
- A complete application form detailing academic experiences and
Chinese language skills.
- A two-page summary resume, including academic and professional
honors (full CVs will not be reviewed).
- A two-page cover letter addressing how the proposed program
contributes to language training, doctoral studies, and future
plans.
- Two letters of recommendation: one from an academic supervisor
or professor and one from a recent Chinese language teacher, both
sent directly to Dylan Plung at dplung@nbr.org by February 17,
2025.
- Electronic transcripts from all educational institutions
attended (upload as PDFs in the application portal).If not evident
through transcripts or applying to the Prospective PhD track...
- Please explain your plans to pursue a PhD in your cover
letter.
- Ask your academic supervisor or professor to address your
aptitude for a PhD program in their recommendation
letter.Application Deadline and Selection ProcessApplications are
due by 11:59 PM (PT) on February 17, 2025. The Fellowship Program
team will review applications and make recommendations to an
independent selection committee, which will make final decisions in
March. Awards will be announced by mid-April 2025.About NBRThe
